Obscene dances at Narail <i>jatra</i>
Immoral activities are being carried out in the name of jatra (opera) in Skeikhhati Ghat area of Sheikhhati union under Sadar upazila.
Obscene dance shows take place every night. Besides, the announcements over loudspeakers have become a routine nuisance for the residents of the area.
Although the district administration gave permission only to perform jatra at the place for 15 days from November 20, a section of unscrupulous people are staging obscene dances violating the agreement.
Salim Reza Masum, chairman of Sheikhhati union said that the jatra authorities have arranged this type of activities to attract the local youths. They are doing brisk business at the cost of their moral degradation, he said.
All these are done under the nose of the local police. Police from Sheikhhati also attend those programmes every night and collect bribe money, locals said.
When asked, Nimai Kumar Biswas, president of jatra committee told this correspondent over phone that the teams were performing jatra only and refused to discuss anything more.
While visiting that area on Wednesday night, this correspondent saw all immoral activities taking place openly.
Locals last week urged the authorities to stop these obscene and illegal activities but to no effect.
Md Rofiqul Islam, officer in-charge of Narail Sadar PS said, "If they perform obscene dances in the name of jatra, I shall definitely take action".
Deputy commissioner Md Zohirul Haque said, the groups are not allowed to perform anything other than jatra. I shall ask the executive magistrate to look into the matter, he added.
