Robberies in three districts
Robbers beat up, shot and stabbed people before looting houses and a pick-up van in Habiganj, Gaibandha and Bagerhat early yesterday and on Saturday.
Five villagers sustained bullet wounds as armed robbers swooped on a house at village Kalikapur under Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj district early yesterday.
Injured Shamsul Haque, 40, Rahmat Ali, 25, Eman Ali, 40, Taiyeb Ali, 18, and Saddam Hossain, 20, were admitted to the Chunarughat upazila health complex.
The villagers, however, caught Nura Miah, a gang member hailing from Basantapur village of the same upazila, reports our staff correspondent in Syhet.
Officer in-charge of Chunarughat PS Syed Mahbubur Rahman said a gang of about 10 to 12 attacked the house of Manik Miah at about 1:30 am.
They took away Tk 18,000, ten tolas of gold ornaments and other valuables from the house at gunpoint. As the members of the house raised a hue and cry, the neighbouring people surrounded the gang.
At this, the robbers fired several gunshots at the villagers injuring five and creating panic in the area.
In Gaibandha, highway robbers stabbed three passengers and looted cash and valuables worth over Tk 1 lakh 50 thousand at Halhalia bridge point on the Sundarganj-Gaibandha Road early yesterday.
Police said, a gang put up road barricade with logs and detained a pick up van at Halhalia bridge. They tied up five people including the driver and beat them up. Later they look away cash Tk 1 lakh 50 thousand and five mobile sets at arms point. The passengers were betel leaf traders. They were returning home from Rangpur after selling goods, reports Our Correspondent.
The robbers also stabbed three passengers as they raised a hue and cry.
In Bagerhat, a gang of robbers looted gold ornaments, cash and other valuables worth Tk 1.5 lakh from two houses at Khudra Chashri village in Sadar upazila early Saturday.
Bagerhat model police station OC Moazzem Hossain, quoting locals said a gang entered the houses of Altaf Hossain and his neighbour Nayan Odhikari late at night and took the house members hostage at gunpoint, reports UNB.
They later beat up the people of the houses mercilessly and looted two tolas of gold ornaments, Tk 34,000 in cash and other valuables.
Hearing the hue and cry, local people after a hot chase caught one of the robbers along with a sharp knife while others managed to flee.
They later handed over robber Shahidul Islam, hailed from Narail district, to police after a good beating.
