UPDF man kidnapped and killed, 2 held with arms
Two members of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF), an anti-peace treaty outfit, were held along with arms and ammunition by the army personnel at Junomachhara in Ghagra union under Kawkhali upazila yesterday.
They were identified as Nikhil Tripura,23, son of Sona Ranjan Tripura of Naniachar village and Ratan Chakma,36, son of Notun Chakma of Chelchhara village of the union.
The security men also seized a homemade pistol, a bullet and two locally made light guns (LG) from their possession.
The two were detained by army personnel when they were roaming suspiciously in Junomachhara area, said Shyamol Kanti Barua, officer in-charge (OC) of Kawkhali police station.
Later, they were handed over to police, said the OC.
However, in a press release yesterday, press secretary of UPDF Sonamoni Chakma said that a gang of armed pro-peace treaty PCJSS men came to Junomachhara and picked up their two members at gun point while they were taking tea at a stall there.
The PCJSS cadres later handed them over to army at Champatuli army camp. The UPDF men possessed no arms, he claimed.
Earlier, on Friday night, a UPDF supporter was kidnapped and later killed allegedly by the armed cadres of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS at Boroitali village under Jurachhari upazila.
The deceased was identified as Shanta Chakma alias Chingo, 20, son of Padma Lochan Chakma of the village.
A gang, numbering about 12, swooped on the house of Shanta at about 10:00pm and picked him up at gun point. The assailants took him to a nearby jungle and killed him with sharp weapon. Shanta was an active supporter of UPDF, said sub inspector Rafiqul Islam of Jurachhari police station, quoting locals.
Michel Chakma, secretary of Gonotantrik Jubo Forum central unit, an associate body of UPDF, in a press release on Saturday blamed PCJSS for the kidnapping and killing.
Sajib Chakma, assistant information secretary of PCJSS, however, refuted the allegation and blamed it on the internal conflict in UPDF.
