Jamaat chief in Ishwardi, 8 Shibir men in Jessore held

Police on Friday night arrested Jamaat chief of Ishwardi upazila in Pabna and eight Chhatra Shibir activists in Jessore district town. Jamaat Ameer of Ishwardi upazila unit was arrested from Tengrapara village in Ishwardi upazila, reports our correspondent. Family members alleged that a police team encircled the house of Golam Rabbani Khan at midnight and took him to the local police station. Officer in-charge (OC) Kazi Haniful Islam of Ishwardi PS said, local Jamaat activists held meeting and took out a procession at Dasuria on Friday in favour of the road march of BNP-led four-party alliance. He said, the Jamaat men might have carried out subversive acts. However, party sources said police arrested Rabbani in a bid to foil the road march programme. Our Benapole correspondent adds: Police arrested eight Islami Chhatra Shibir activists from a procession in Jessore town Friday night. Office in-charge of Kotwali PS Ashraf Hossain said Chhatra Shibir town unit brought out a procession in the town at night in support of BNP's road march. When the procession was crossing Eidgah intersection chanting slogans, police obstructed them and arrested eight activists of the Jamaat student wing. The arrestees are Arifur Rahman, Saidur Rahman, Solaiman, Asadur Rahman, Abu Syed, Shaheen Alam, Alamgir Hossain and Raihan Rahman. District Jamaat office said police arrested the Shibir men from a peaceful procession and charged batons on them, leaving five activists injured.
