Local administration imposed Section 144 at Debiganj upazila headquarters until 6:00pm yesterday as two rival groups of Jubo Dal upazila unit arranged separate conferences of the unit at the same venue same time. Convener of the Jubo Dal upazila unit Tofsikul Islam Tomu said he had earlier taken permission from the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) to hold a conference of the unit at Debdarutala in the town. He alleged that local Jubo Dal leader Abdul Majid and his men announced to hold a separate conference of the unit at the same place same time to foil the programme. Contacted, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahbubul Haque said he imposed section 144 at the upazila headquaters for 12 hours from 6:00am, apprehending a clash between the two groups of local Jubo Dal unit. Party sources said two factions of local BNP--one led by former Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar and the other by former Lawmaker from Panchagarh-2 constituency Mojahar Hossain--have been holding party programmes separately for the last two years. The two groups also formed separate committees of Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal units in the upazila, sources added.
