Activities of Khulna city unit BCL suspended
The central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has suspended activities of its Khulna city unit, apparently to check growing incidents of violence in different in colleges and universities in the city due to intra-party squabbles of the student organisation.
In a press statement issued on Friday, central BCL President HM Badiuzzaman Sohag and General Secretary Siddiky Nazrul Alam said they have asked Khulna city BCL President Deb Dulal Barhoi and General Secretary Shahjalal Hossain to attend Dhaka central office on Sunday to explain the intra-party conflicts in Khulna.
Earlier on Thursday evening, Khulna city Awami League (AL) issued a press release announcing the decision to cut off relations with Khulna city unit of Chhatra League in view of growing intra-party squabbles.
Frequent clashes between two factions of Chhatra League are tarnishing the image of the ruling party in Khulna, said the press release signed by city AL President and Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque and General Secretary Mizanur Rahman Mizan.
Recently leaders and activists of the two factions of Chhatra League have become extremely unruly and engaged in fierce clashes, vitiating academic atmosphere in different colleges and universities, said the two AL leaders.
"We have also asked Sramik League, Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League and Awami Ainjibi Parishad to sever ties with Khulna city unit of Chhatra League until a new committee is formed," goes the press statement.
Chhatra Leader Sheikh Sadi, 24, sustained serious stab injuries in an attack by rivals of the same party in front of Awami League office on Wednesday night. He is now under treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On last Monday, six people were seriously injured during a fierce clash between two rival factions of Chhatra League in Khulna City College.
On July 30 this year, nine people sustained injuries in a clash between two rival factions of Chhatra League in Khulna Sundarban College.
The same day, 17 people were injured in sporadic clashes between two rival factions of Chhatra League in Daulatpur Government BL University College.
On January 25, ten people sustained injuries as a result of intra-party clashes of Chhatra League in Khulna Medical College.
