Boy killed in Sunamganj as villagers lock in clash

A teenage boy was killed while two others were bullet-hit during a clash between the people of two villages in Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj district on Wednesday night. The deceased was identified as Ahmed Ali, 18, a madrassa student. Jagannathpur police yesterday morning picked up three villagers from Sonatanpur for quizzing. They are Anis Miah, Sumen Miah and Azizur Rahman. Ahmed Ali of Sonatanpur Hafizia Madrassa and two others were hit by bullets as they, along with others, came out of their hostel to watch the warring villagers at about 10:45pm. Ali succumbed to injuries on the way to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital while Badrul Islam, 35, and Salman Rahman, 15, were admitted there. Several villagers said yesterday that at about 8:30pm on Wednesday, Asadur Rahman of Sonatanpur locked in an altercation at the local bazaar with Lutfur Rahman of Kurihal village over a cowlifting incident. As the news spread to their villages, supporters of Lutfur and Asad with sticks and other lethal weapons rushed to the spot and locked in a fierce clash. At least five gunshots were fired during the incident. Locals said both the groups have licensed guns, but they could not ascertain who had opened fires.
