Khulna city BNP has hung a big portrait of Tarique Rahman, senior vice-president of the party, on the roof of an AL man's house without the owner's permission. The owner of the building, located at Khanajahan Ali Road under Sadar Police Station, is KCC councillor from ward No 25 Prof Runu Reza, wife of slain Jubo League central leader Shahid Iqbal Bithar. Prof Ranu was elected ward councillor in a by-election held on June 29 in 2010 as the seat fell vacant following her husband's death on July 11 in 2009. “I own this building by inheritance after murder of my husband. City BNP has hung the portrait (50 feet by 50 feet) on the house without my consent,” Prof Runu said, terming the act as highly improper and provocative. Being an active member of Khulna Awami League, I cannot allow hanging of this portrait. My earnest request to city BNP chief Nazrul Islam Manju to pull down the portrait has so far gone unheeded, she said. On Tuesday, the councillor filed a petition with Khulna Sadar Police Station, requesting officer-in-charge (OC) SM Kamruzzaman to help her pull down the portrait. “The OC is yet to respond to my request,” she further said. Contacted, city BNP President Nazrul Islam Manju, also a lawmaker, said the portrait will be a pulled down on November 28 after BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia leaves Khulna, ending party's road march and public meeting programmes on November 27. KCC Mayor and Khulna city Awami League President Talukder Abdul Khaleque also termed hanging of the portrait without permission of building owner provocative. Meanwhile, all the 31 wards of Khulna city have been flooded with posters, placards, banners and festoons ahead of the Dhaka-Khulna road march and public meeting in Khulna on November 27. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will lead the road march and address the rally. Three-tier security measures have been planned by police centring the road march and the rally. Around 700 policemen and members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) will be deployed in and around the venue of the rally at Circuit House maidan, said Assistant Police Commissioner Molla Azad Hossain.
