Magura hartal passes off peacefully

Our Correspondent, Magura
A half-day hartal at Sreepur upazila headquarters in Magura passed off peacefully yesterday. The supporters of an Awami League (AL) backed union parishad (UP) chairman enforced the hartal after an election tribunal on Tuesday declared his nearest rival Enamul Haque Pann, a BNP supported candidate, elected after recounting of votes. Mashiur's men took out a procession at the upazila headquarters and also formed a human chain. No untoward incident was, however, reported as of writing of this report at around 6:00pm. Following a case filed by Enamul Haque Pannu, tribunal Judge Sheikh Razia Sultana arranged a second count of votes cast in Sreepur Sadar Union Parisha election held on June 9 this year. The court declared Pannu elected as he got 666 more vote than Mashiur. After the court order, Mashiur's men held a protest rally and besieged the office of the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) for two hours.
