Transport strike in 18 Jessore routes from Thursday

Jessore District Transport Owners'Association will enforce an indefinite transport strike on 18 routes from November 24 to press home its five-point demand. The demands include cancellation of fuel price hike, repair of the damaged roads and ban on the movements of human haulers and easy bikes (battery-run three-wheelers). Ali Akbar, general secretary of District Transport Owners' Association, called the strike at a press conference at the association's office at 11:00am yesterday. Azizul Alam Minto, president of District Transport Owners' Association, Ekramul Haq Chowdhury, president of Jessore Bus Owners' Association, Romesh Mal, general secretary of Jessore Minibus Owners' Association, and Aurangajeb Munna, joint secretary of Chuadanga Bus Owners' Association, were present at the conference. Leaders of Jessore Bus Owners' Association and Bangladesh Transport Workers Association and have extended their support to the strike call given by the Transport Owners' Association. “We have decided to go for an indefinite transport strike as the authorities concerned did not pay heed to the demands,” said Azizul Islam Minto. He said transport owners are incurring huge loss due to hike in prices of diesel and motor parts. Plying of vehicles has become difficult due to bad condition of the roads, Minto further said, urging the government to repair the damaged roads as soon as possible.
