Forest officials rescue the hapless vulture

Forest officials of Thakurgaon yesterday brought the nearly extinct species of vulture, caught by a local from Shegoon Bagan in Pollibidyut area of Thakurgaon Sadar upazila on Sunday morning, to Ramsagar Jatiya Udyan in Dinajpur district. "I with three staff went to the house of Rezaul Islam in Pollibidyut area under Thakurgaon Sadar upazila at about 7:00am and rescued the vulture. Veterinary surgeon of livestock department is giving treatment to it," said Kazi Mostafizur Rahman, range officer of forest department in Thakurgaon. "We informed the higher authorities of the matter. The vulture will be kept at Ramsagar Jatiya Udyan until getting further instructions," he said. Ramsagar Jatiya Udyan is maintained by the Dinajpur Divisional Forest Office. "I caught the vulture from a tree at Shegoon Bagan in Pollibidyut area under Thakurgaon Sadar upazila on Sunday morning in an injured state from at about 8:00am and brought it to my house. Hearing the news many people came to see it," Rezaul Islam, 30, said during this correspondent's visit to the village on Sunday afternoon. The 1.75-foot-long and two-foot-high bird weighing about 15kg was seen tied up with a rope. "It is a nearly extinct species of vulture. They mainly eat flesh of dead animals. Now they suffer for lack of food as people usually dump dead animals under the ground," District Livestock Officer Mosaddikur Rahman said. The birds are also facing habitat problem as people fell down big trees where vultures like to nest, he said. The Daily Star yesterday published a picture of the caught vulture with caption. A similar bird was caught from Haribill at Danarhat village under the same upazila on April 4.
