Shyamnagar people celebrate liberation of the area in '71
People of Shyamnagar upazila under Satkhira district yesterday celebrated liberation of the area from Pakistani occupation army.
On this day in 1971, the upazila was totally freed from enemy forces.
Shyamnagar upazila Muktijoddha Sangsad, Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee and Projonma '71 jointly took up programme to mark the day.
The day's programmes began with placing of wreaths on the graves of four martyred freedom fighters at Gopalpur village in the morning.
A rally was held on the premises of Shyamnagar upazila parishad premises at around 10:00am with Mukta Dibas Udjapon Committee Convener Principal Ashek-e-Elahi in the chair.
Former Awami League (AL) lawmaker AK Fazlul Haque, Shyamnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Khan Daulatuzzaman, local AL leader Shafiul Azam Lenin, journalist Sharifullah Kaisar Sumon and freedom fighters Abdul Bari and Shahadat Hossain addressed the rally.
The speakers urged the government to finish the trial of war criminals within the next year. They said a powerful quarter is conspiring to foil the trial.
They urged the people to stay united against the enemies of our Liberation War and build up resistance to the conspiracy.
Later, a procession was brought out in the upazila town.
