English language fairs held under English in Schools (EIS) programme saw lively participation of young learners at two schools in Pirojpur and Joypurhat districts yesterday. Around two years ago, The Daily Star and mobile operator Robi jointly initiated EIS programme to inspire students to improve their English language skill. At the daylong fair titled Safalya Ashbei (success is a must) at Bhandaria Bandor Government Girls High School in Bhandaria upazila of Pirojpur district, over 120 students took part in interesting activities for English learning, reports our Barisal correspondent. Following screening of a movie at the fair, students took part in spot quiz on vocabulary, moral lesson and one-word question, extempore speech, role play, writing competition and picture description. They also recited poems, told jokes and sang songs. After the prize distribution among the winners, students formed an English language club. Akhtar Hossain, an English teacher of the school, presided over the fair. Emon Rahman and Kazi Jahangir Alam, Adcom representatives from Dhaka, attended. Our Dinajpur correspondent adds: More than 200 students of different classes attended the English language fair at Akkelpur FU Pilot High School in Akkelpur upazila under Joypurhat district yesterday. The event started with the screening of Lion King, a globally renowned movie, followed by students' participation in spot quiz, vocabulary test, one word question and quick questions -- all based on the movie. Later, prizes were handed over to the students. "Our students' English learning process sees obstacles due to various reasons and so, they often speak incorrect English. But we found that proper motivation helps them to improve dramatically,” Md Abdus Salam Mondal, headmaster of the school, said in his speech as the chief guest. He hailed The Daily Star and Robi for distributing newspapers to his school and organising such a fair for the school students. Shamsul Islam Chand, assistant headmaster of the school, Md Saiful Karib, regional area manager of Robi, and Md Sajib of Adcom were present as special guests at the function.
