Assault on businessman sparks protest in C'nawabganj

Several hundred businessmen formed human chain, held a rally here yesterday demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the culprits who assaulted a businessman and local BNP leader on Monday. Chapainawabganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, District Contractors' Association, District Babosaee Oikya Parishad and Chapainawabganj Trade Association jointly organised the human chain and the rally in front of the deputy commissioner's office in the town. At the protest rally, the speakers urged the administration to take stern action against local drug pedders. Addiction is leading a large number of youths to ashtray and forcing them to commit serious crimes. The drug peddlers must be resisted to save the young generation, they said. On Monday night, a gang of local youths beat up businessman Abul Bashar injuring him seriously at Bir Shreshtha Mohiuddin Jahangir Bridge toll plaza in the town. Abul Bashar is a member of Chapainawabganj District Contractors Association and also a member of district unit BNP. The protesters demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the culprits. They also threatened to shut all markets, shops including Sonamasjid land port indefinitely if the criminals are not arrested within a week. Later, leaders of different businessmen organisations submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner (DC) and superintendent of police (SP) of Chapainawabganj.
