Saima for autism confce in India next yr
Saima Wazed Putul, chairperson of National Advisory Committee on Autism in Bangladesh, met Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi yesterday and proposed an Asian conference on autism in India next year.
Sonia promptly responded by saying she would think out the proposal, sources privy to the about half-hour meeting in New Delhi told The Daily Star.
Both Sonia and Putul, a prominent advocate for people with autism, agreed on the need for strengthening regional networking to raise awareness of the disorder.
The Congress chief, herself a champion of the cause, accepted a request from Putul to guide and advise her on how to tone up the South Asian networking in tackling the issue.
Putul attended and addressed a national workshop on autism held in New Delhi on Wednesday. She had played a key role in organising Sonia's visit to Dhaka this July to attend an international conference on autism.
