Bapa for tougher action against land grabbers

Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan (Bapa) leaders urged the government to take tougher punitive measures against grabbers to save water bodies, rivers and canals around the city, says a press release yesterday. Their demands include recovering the rivers from the grabbers, evicting illegal structures adjacent to the rivers, and taking initiatives to keep the rivers, including the Buriganga, pollution-free. They made the demands after visiting the city's Hazaribagh area where Matador Group as well as some other organisations had grabbed the Buriganga second channel and a wetland beside it. A team led by Acting General Secretary of Bapa JK Baral visited the spot following a media report. On Wednesday, The Daily Star published a report that Matador Group had filled up a large portion of the wetland near Hazaribagh without permission from the Department of Environment.
