Huge response to call for first batch admission
Twenty-five candidates will vie for each of the 400 seats in six departments under four faculties in the first batch admission test of Barisal University (BU) under 2011-12 academic session.
Of the 9,924 students who have applied in the first session, many with fairly good results in the HSC examinations will be denied admission due to the tough competition, said Prof Dr Harunor Rashid Khan, vice chancellor of the university.

According to the BU admission committee, 1469 students applied for 65 seats under Ka-unit (science faculty), 3716 students applied for 195 seats under Kha-unit (humanities and social science faculties) and 4,739 students applied for 140 seats under Ga-unit (business studies faculty).

The admission seekers will sit for a 120-mark admission test in MCQ system at six centres including four government colleges and two government schools in the city on December 2 and 3. Students will be selected on the basis of results in the test and the 80 marks counted for their HSC and SSC results.

Academic activities of the university will start at its temporary campus in Barisal Zila School and continue there until completion of the infrastructure on permanent campus at Karnakathi on the eastern bank of the Kirtonkhola River in Barisal Sadar upazila, said BU Vice Chancellor Prof Harunor Rashid Khan.
The university will provide transport for teachers, students, staffs and employees and if possible, arrange their residential accommodation on rented houses around the temporary campus until the facilities are available at its permanent campus, he said.
It will take three to five years to complete the infrastructure construction works costing Tk 95 crore on 50 acres of land at Karnakathi village, he said.
In a bid to attract meritorious students, the university will award scholarship to all admitted students and form a trust for the purpose, Prof Harun added.
The newly established Barisal University is the only general public university in the division and 33rd public university of the country.
