BNP leader, 9 others get life for killing
A court here yesterday sentenced 10 people including a BNP leader, who is also union parishad chairman and former Sarbahara Party man, to life term imprisonment, for killing a social worker in 2005.
The convicts are Kamrul Hasan Khan Himu, Agarpur UP chairman, also Babuganj upazila BNP vice president and former Sarbahara Party leader, Mezbhah Uddin Babul, Zafar Talukdar, Shamsul Haque Peyada, Abdus Salam Talukdar, Abdul Mazid Sardar, Kamrul Sardar, Md Sahiduzzaman, Abul Kalam Dalal and Md Ripon.
They were also fined Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more RI.
A K M Salimullah, district and sessions judge of Barisal pronounced the verdict after examining 15 of 20 witnesses in presence of the accused.
Other eight accused in the case were acquitted of charges.
The prosecution story, in brief, is that the convicts attacked the house of Alhaj Abul Kasem Sardar, a social worker of Thakurmallik village under Babuganj upazila of the district on April 4, 2005 night and hacked him to death.
A case was filed in this connection a day after the murder with Babuganj police station by Md Faruk Hossain Babul, son of the victim.
Sub inspector Abdus Sattar and Abdur Rob Akond investigated the case and a charge sheet was filed against the 10 accused on January 14 in 2006.
