College girl's death in road accident sparks protest

Death of a college girl in a road accident at Shibganj village in the Sadar upazila triggered protest by the locals yesterday. Traffic movement on Thakurgaon-Pirganj road came to a halt for four hours due to road blockade following the death of the college girl. The deceased was identified as Mala Rani,16, a first year student of HSC at Shibganj Degree College and daughter of Dhanadeb Roy of Harinarayanpur village under the same upazila. Police and local people said, the accident occurred at about 10:00am when a Thakurgaon bound passenger bus hit the girl as she stepped on the road from a link road, killing her on the spot. The girl was returning home from college after attending a private tuition. After the incident, agitated local people including college students barricaded the road and vandalised several vehicles. People withdrew the barricade at 2:00pm when police and local administration assured them of taking action against the culprits. A case was filed with Thakurgaon police station in this connection.
