Two associations on animal husbandry yesterday demanded continuation of the admission process at Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU). Leaders of Animal Husbandry Students Union (AHSU) at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) and Bangladesh Animal Husbandry Association (AHA) at a press conference at Mymensingh press club auditorium said that the discipline has a good demand and prospect in the country. Meanwhile, BAU animal husbandry faculty students also formed a human chain in front of the press club yesterday demanding the same. At the press conference the leaders of the two associations said that graduates from animal husbandry faculty are working relentlessly to flourish dairy, poultry, animal feeds and meat sectors in the country. The faculty was introduced at BAU in 1962 and it is still on at the university, they said. As the animal husbandry graduates have good demand in the country's private sectors, PSTU has decided to admit 30 students in animal husbandry department this year taking University Grants Commission (UGC) permission. But the veterinary students are opposing the opening of animal husbandry department at PSTU and trying to stop the admission process, they said. A vested quarter wants to hinder the production in dairy and poultry farms in the country to make the nation dependent on import, they alleged. We protest this ill-motive of the vested quarter and demand continuation of admission under animal husbandry department at PSTU, the leaders said. President of AHA Dr Zohirul Haque Khandaker, Dr AK Majlul Haque Bhuiyan, Dr Md Nurul Islam, Dr Md Azharul Haque, Dr Subash Chandra Das, vice-president of AHSU Md Nazmul Huda and its secretary Shahjalal Sarker were present at the press conference. Dr SD Chowdhury, dean of animal husbandry faculty at BAU read out the written statement. Veterinary students at BAU in Mymensingh and Hajee Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU) in Dinajpur have been protesting the move to open animal husbandry department at PSTU recently. They staged demonstrations including human chains and observed rail and highway barricade programmes.
