Thakurgaon ethnic people call to meet their 10-point demand
District unit of Jatiya Adibasi Parishad, a platform for ethnic people, yesterday formed a human chain on the premises of deputy commissioner's office to press home their 10-point demand.
The demands included making scopes at educational institutions to admit their children as per quota, establishing constitutional rights of ethnic people and formation of a separate land commission to protect their land rights.
After the human chain programme, the participants also submitted a memorandum to prime minister through the deputy commissioner in this regard.
A discussion followed the programme on the DC office premises where the speakers alleged that the quota for the community at the higher educational institutions is not maintained properly.
They also called for a move to admit three students of the community in Thakurgaon at any medical college in the country.
They said that the members of the community are still victim of discrimination in different fields as successive governments did not pay proper attention to their causes.
They further alleged that the indigenous people also do not get proper treatment at hospitals.
The speakers demanded formation of a separate land commission immediately to protect their land rights. They also called to establish a separate ministry to deal with their problems.
The speakers urged the government to introduce mother tongue-based primary education for their children and community quota in higher education and government service.
They said Adibasi people played a significant role during the liberation war in 1971 but they are yet to get constitutional recognition and rights.
Earlier, several hundred indigenous people brought out a procession which paraded different streets in the town.
