'Preserve PC Sorcar's house, free it from grabbers'
Magicians form human chain, hold rally in Tangail

Magicians in the country yesterday demanded restoration of the ancestral house of Jadu Samrat (magic icon) PC Sorcar at Ashekpur, recovering it from the grabbers. Over 100 magicians from different parts of the country gathered in front of Tangail Press Club in the morning. They formed a human chain and held a rally there to press for their demands. Khalekuzzaman Khan Labu, general secretary of PC Sorcar Memorial Magic Academy in Tangail, presided over the rally. Speakers at the rally said, 'Jadu Bhaban', the ancestral house of world famous magician PC Sorcar, at Ashekpur in Tangail town has been grabbed in the name of a housing project there. They said the great magician is a pride of Tangail and flag bearer of the country and vowed to protect his house to save the history. Different organisations of magicians have already taken programmes including magic shows to tell the tale of PC Sorcar to the future generations of the country. Besides, PC Sorcar Memorial Magic Academy was established in 1992 to preserve the works of the great magician, they said. They demanded immediate steps to recover the house from the grabbers and set up a museum and magic academy there to save the memory of PC Sarkar. Among others, Akter Hossain and AK Azad, president and general secretary of Jadu Shilpi Kalyan Parishad, Moinul Khan, president of I.B.M 295 (America), Azad Khan, president of Jadu Shilpi Parishad and AH Rana, general secretary of Magician Federation of Bangladesh, spoke at the rally. Earlier, the magicians brought out a procession in the town and submitted a memorandum to Tangail deputy commissioner M Bazlul Karim Chowdhury in support of their demands. PC Sorcar was born at his ancestral home at Ashekpur in Tangail in 1913. His father was Bhagaban Chandra Sarkar and mother Kusum Kamini Sarkar. After passing matriculation from Tangail, PC Sorcar took admission in Ananda Mohan College in Mymensingh in 1931, where his talent for magic began to take shape. He went to Europe in 1934 and became renowned as a world class magician at home and abroad within 1937. PC Sorcar's family left their Tangail house during partition in 1947 as they opted for India. The great magician died of cardiac arrest while performing at a magic show in Japan on January 6, 1971.
