Students and teachers of Chachra Government Primary School in Tularampur union under Narail Sadar upazila attend classes amid risk of accident as several cracks have developed on the roof of the worn-out building. Six teachers conduct classes of 250 students in one shift. Built in 1950, the one-storied school building see cracks in the roof covering five rooms -- one for office and four others for classes. With plasters fallen off at places, the exposed rods have rusted. Recently the authorities closed one classroom due to its miserable condition. "Now the kids of that class receive lessons under the open sky on the school premises. We cannot put the lives of students at risk," said assistant teacher Monira Khatun. Other students still attend classes in rooms and they remain in panic during classes as chunks of plaster often fall off the ceiling. "A few days ago, I was hurt as a lump of plaster fell on my shoulder," said Sorafat Hossain, a class four student of the school. "My son reads in class four. I will shift him to another school if the authority fails to take immediate step," said Kamal Hossain, a guardian. Poritosh Kumar Ghatok, headmaster of the school, said he has informed the chairman of school managing committee and the district education officials about the matter. "A big amount of money is required to repair the roof of the school. I have submitted a prayer to the Upazila Education Office in this regard but we are yet to get any response," said managing committee Chairman Md Kamruzzaman Biswas. When contacted, Upazila Primary Education Officer Md Ali Haidar said, "I got an application in this regard. I visited the school and sent a proposal to the higher authority for approval."
