Student murder triggers protest

Chayan MiaTeachers and students of Bhatia High School in Karimganj upazila blocked Kishoreganj- Chamta highway yesterday noon demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the culprits involved in the killing of a student of the school in the morning.
The victim, Md Chayan Mia, 16, son of Md Farid Uddin of Bhatia Gangpara village in the upazila, was a class ten student of the school.
Police quoted locals and family members as saying that a gang of criminals entered Chayan's house by breaking open the door at around 4:30am yesterday, hacked him indiscriminately with sharp weapons and left the scene.
Chayan was rushed to Karimganj Upazila Health Complex and then shifted to Kishoreganj Adhunik Sadar Hospital. As his condition was deteriorating fast, doctors referred him to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital where he died at around 9:00am.
Hearing the news at around 11:00am, teachers and students of Bhatia high School took out a procession in the area demanding arrest and punishment of the killers. They put up barricades on the highway in front of the school, disrupting traffic for an hour from 12:00 noon to 1:00pm.
The agitating teachers and students removed the barricades after the officer-in-Charge (OC) of Karimganj Police Station assured them of arresting the culprits soon.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Kishoreganj Adhunik Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Family members said Chayan had an altercation over a trivial matter with Ripan, son of Khurshid Mia, of the village after Juma Prayers on Friday. The attack was a sequel to the incident, they claimed.
Police picked Khurshid Mia, father of Ripan, from the village. Ripon has gone into hiding since the incident. No case was filed with the police station concerned as of 8:00pm yesterday.
