Road crashes kill 7, injure 21

Seven people were killed and 21 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajbari and Bagerhat yesterday. Staff correspondent reports: Three people, including a minor boy, were killed and another was injured in separate road accidents in the city's Mirpur area yesterday. The deceased were Mohammad Joy, 8, son of Akkel Ali, of Kafrul, Mohammad Azad, 35, a rickshaw-puller, of Section No-7 of Mirpur, and Akash Mia, 18, a vegetables vendor of Pallabi. Police said a battery run three-wheeler knocked down Joy when he was crossing the road in front of Mirpur Dental College at Section-14 of Mirpur around 5:30pm. Locals caught the three-wheeler but its driver managed to escape the scene. In another accident, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw hit Azad's rickshaw and run away leaving him critically injured near Mirpur Police Station around 6:00am. Locals rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Meanwhile, Akash was killed and an auto-rickshaw driver injured when a truck hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw while he was carrying vegetables on the auto-rickshaw to his shop at Section No-12 of Mirpur from Karwan bazar around 5:00am. The unidentified auto-rickshaw driver was admitted to DMCH. Staff correspondent from Chittagong says: A helper of a three-wheeler was killed when a speeding truck hit the CNG-run three-wheeler at Mansurabad of Double Mooring Police Station in the port city yesterday. The deceased was Md Liton, 18. There was no passenger on the three-wheeler during the accident. The driver fled away from the scene along with his truck, police said. Our Manikganj correspondent adds: A truck helper was killed on the spot when a Dhaka-bound jute-laden truck lost its control and fell into a roadside ditch at Kutirhat of Rajbari Sadar upazila yesterday. The deceased was Mostafa Fakir, 25, son of Kalam Fakir, of Ruppur village, of Rajbari Sadar upazila. UNB from Bagerhat adds: Two people were killed and at least 20 others injured as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch in Saat Gambuj area of Sadar upazila yesterday morning. Police said the Bagerhat-bound bus coming from Khulna skidded off the road and fell into the ditch when its driver lost control over the steering at about 10:00am, leaving the two people dead on the spot. One of the deceased was identified as Johra Begum, 60, of Belua village in Nazirpur upazila of Pirojpur while the identity of another young man could not be known immediately. The injured were admitted to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital and Khulna Medical College Hospital. The bus driver and helper managed to escape the scene, police said. Police recovered the bodies and sent those to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
