Pirates rob crew of clinker vessel
Pirates swooped on a clinker-laden vessel at Talbaria under Sharankhola range of the east wing of Sundarbans Forest Division early Wednesday.
Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF) Kapashi Bikash Chandra said a gang of pirates attacked the vessel, MV Shohagpur, at around 2:30am and looted Tk 40,000, nine cellphones and other personal belongings from crewmen.
Two crewmen were injured during the attack. They are master of the ship Hemayet Hossain of Alfadanga upazila in Faridpur district and sailor Sadek Hossain of Bagerhat district.
ACF Kapashi Bikash said the Dhaka-bound vessel from Khulna ran aground on a shoal when it reached Talbaria. The gang stormed into the ship after master Hemayet Hossain anchored it to wait for tide of the river, he added.
Md Siddiqur Rahman, camp-in-charge of coastguards at Sharankhola, said they have intensified their efforts to track down the pirates.
The robbery was committed at the clinker-laden vessel at a time when joint operation 'Sundarban-3' is going on in full swing to contain piracies in the Sundarbans, coastal belts, rivers and the Bay of Bengal. Coastguards, BGB, Rab, Police, Ansars and forest guards have joined the operation.
