Fugitive convict arrested

Police arrested one of the fugitive convicts in Jatiya Samajtantkrik Dal (JSD) leader Kazi Aref Ahmed murder case at a village in Chuadanga on Wednesday. The arrestee is Abdul Jabbar alias Tikka, 52, one of the top cadres of outlawed Banglar Communist Party led by Nuruzzaman Laltu. Acting on a tip-off, police raided Kurulgachi village in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga district at around 4:30pm and arrested Tikka at his brother-in-law's house. He was awarded life sentence in the murder case in 2004. JSD central leader Kazi Aref Ahmed and four other leaders of the party's Kushtia unit-- Lokman Hossain, Yakub Ali, Shamsher Ali and Israil Hossain--were killed in an armed attack on a rally at Kalidashpur village in Daulatpur upazila of the district on February 16 in1999. Police filed a murder case with Daulatpur Police Station the same day. On August 30, 2004, the then additional district and sessions judge Fazlur Rahman pronounced the verdict in the case, sentencing 10 people to death and 12 others to life imprisonment. Those awarded death penalty are Ilyas Hossain and Sahir Uddin of Talbaria village, Baker of Kishorinagar village, Mannan Mollah of Pachabhita village, Anwar, Jhantu and Jahan of Kursha village in Kushtia district, and Jalal of Baliashisha village, Safayat Hossain of Rajnagar village and Roushan of Bhabanipur village in Meherpur district. Of them, Mannan, Jahan, Jalal and Baker have been absconding since the incident while Roushan was killed in a 'shootout' with police on August 27, 2006. The convicts, sentenced to life in prison, are Nuruzzaman Laltu of Kairadanga village in Chuadanga district, Rofat, Asgar and Mohid of Talbaria village, Faraz, Tashir and Garesh Sardar of Kalidaspur village, Majid of Hridoypur village, Mahatab of Rajnagar village, Oliur of Pagla village, Akubbar of Malihad, and Abdul Jabbar aliasTikka of Kursha village in Kushtia. Of them, Tikka, Mahtab, Oliar and Akubbar are still at large while Mohid was killed in 'crossfire' with police on February 12 in 2005.
