Housewife beaten to death, another tortured for dowry
A housewife was beaten to death allegedly by her husband in Kushtia while another was seriously injured by husband in Meherpur for dowry.
In Kushtia, Anisa Khatun, 20, daughter of Intaz Ali of Ambaria in Khoksa upazila was married to Abul Kalam of the village two years ago.
Recently Kalam demanded Tk 25 thousand as dowry and began to torture Anisa off and on for it, family sources said.
Locals said, on Monday noon when Kalam was torturing her locking his room, Anisa died. Kalam fled the scene after the incident. Neighbours found Anisa's body on the floor and informed police.
Uzzal Hossain, brother of the victim filed a case with Khoksa police station.
In Meherpur, local people rescued Bachena Begum, 18, in an unconscious state from field in Gangni upazila on Monday morning and sent her to Gangni upazila health complex.
According to family members of the victim, Bachena, daughter of late Jamal uddin of Kathuli was married to Jasim Uddin, son of Abdur Rahman of the same village three years ago.
During the marriage, Bachena's parent paid Tk 20, 000 to Jasim as dowry. But recently, Jasim demanded Tk 30,000 more from Bachena's father.
On Sunday night, Jasim mercilessly beat up Bachena for the money.
At one stage, Bachena fainted and thinking her dead Jasim along with his family members dumped Bachena's body in Kathuli field.
Bachena is now undergoing treatment at local health complex.
