Procession, rally demanding inter-city train service

Several hundred people yesterday brought out a procession in the district town demanding intercity train service between Dhaka and Chapainawabganj, modernisation of Chapainawabganj railway station and construction of a railway bypass at Amnura junction. After parading the main streets in the town, the processionists held a rally in front of the deputy commissioner's office and submitted a memorandum containing signatures of ten thousand people to the prime minister through the deputy commissioner (DC) to press for the demands Leaders and workers of different political parties, representatives from professional bodies, cultural activists and teachers and students of different educational institutions joined the procession and the rally organised by Chapainawabganj Nagorik Unnayan committee, a citizens' body for development of the district. Addressing the rally, the speakers said the people of Chapainawabganj suffer a lot because they have to go to Rajshahi, 50 kilometres from the Chapainawabganj district headquarters, to travel to the capital by intercity train. “We have to bear 30 to 40 percent additional cost for transporting goods on roads as we avoid Chapainawabganj-Rajshahi rail route due to its dilapidated condition,” they said. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a rally here on April 23 this year declared that intercity train service between Dhaka and Chapainawabganj would be introduced soon. But no step has been taken yet in this regard, the speakers said. They urged to prime minister to introduce intercity train service between Dhaka and Chapainawabganj as soon as possible. Nagorik Unnayan Committee Convener Syed Ahmmed Hossain Badsha, Member- Secretary Touhidur Rahman, local political leaders Mosidul Haque Masud, Rafiqul Islam, Moniruzzaman Monir, Anwar Hossain Dilu, Secretary of Chapainawabganj District Sports Association Tofikul Islam Tofa addressed the rally, among others.
