5 BCL, Jubo League men expelled

District Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies at a meeting yesterday expelled five leaders and activists of district Chhatra League (BCL) and Jubo League on charge of extortion. The expelled accused who lost their primary membership areKhaled Saifullah Rahat, Tareq, Belal Hossain, Mohon and Tutul. The meeting presided by acting president of district Awami League principal Khairul Anam Selim also suggested legal action against the five. Earlier, at least 20 vehicles and five shops were vandalised in Noakhali town Saturday night protesting the arrest of Khaled Saifullah Rahat, 28, a former Bangladesh Chhatra League activist in an extortion case. Police arrested Rahat from Khandakarpara in the town in the evening. Protesting the arrest, Rahat's aides and accomplices vandalised the wayside shops and vehicles on the road from Maijdee Bazar to the new bus stand area around 8:30pm, police said. Rahat is accused in a number of extortion cases, said Mosharraf Hossain, acting officer in-charge of Sudharam police station. The expelled five are no longer involved with the party, said the acting AL president.
