Enclave people vow to start fresh agitation to realise demand
People of Indian enclaves inside Panchagarh district yesterday afternoon brought out processions on the last day of their 10-day agitation demanding early implementation of the enclave exchange deal between Bangladesh and India.
The enclave leaders decided to call off their programme for now due to celebration of Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of Bengali Hindu community. However, they will go for fresh programmes to realise their demand soon.
Earlier on Saturday evening, enclave people brought out 'torch processions' in all Indian enclaves inside Bangladesh.
During their 10-day agitation programme that started from 23 September, they observed 'Nishprodip Raat Japon' (spending night without lighting lamps), 'no lighting stoves,' held signature campaign, human chain, silent procession, bi-cycle procession and protest processions.
People of all the 162 enclaves inside Bangladesh and India simultaneously observed the agitation programme to press home the same demand, said Sirajul Islam, leader of India-Bangladesh Enclave Exchange Co-ordination Committee and chairman of Shalbari enclave.
He said the movement will continue until realisation of the demand.
In absence of basic citizens' rights, the enclave people live in awful conditions amid lack of adequate employment opportunity, infrastructure, educational institutions, electricity and medical facilities, he said.
One hundred and eleven Indian enclaves inside Bangladesh are situated in Panchagarh, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Nilphamari districts while all the 51 Bangladeshi enclaves are in Indian Cooch Behar district.
