Dharla devours aman plants on 45 acres in three days
Flash flood hits 20 Lalmonirhat villages
The Dharla River devoured at least 45 acres of land with standing aman plants in Mogholhat union of Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila in the last three days.
About 50 more acres of aman cropland at Karnopur, Kurul and Badaitari villages in the union are also under threat as erosion by the river continues.
Meanwhile, flash flood hit 20 villages in Hatibandha, Aditmari and Kaliganj upazilas of the district yesterday.
While visiting the erosion-hit areas along with Lalmonirhat sadar upazila agriculture official and the UP chairman yesterday morning, this correspondent saw several farmers at the villages were cutting aman plants for selling it as fodder in the market. The farmers said they are cutting the plants in fear of erosion by the Dhala.
Mogholhat UP Chairman Habibur Rahman Habib said the Dhala has already eroded homesteads and agricultural land of many farmers of the union. I have urged the upazila administration to help the erosion-hit people and take immediate steps to protect the union from the onslaught of the river, the UP chairman added.
Flash flood hit 20 villages in Hatibandha, Aditmari and Kaligonj upazilas of the district yesterday morning. The river Teesta marked a sharp rise due to onrush of water from upstream and was flowing three centimeters above its danger mark.
The affected villages are Goddimari, Sindurna, Dowani, Daliya, Singimari, Madhya Goddimari, Parulia, Barokhata, Dawabari, Saniazan, Char Sindurna, Uttar Goddimari of Hatibandha upazila; Rudreshwar, Jamirabari, Char Kakina, Votmari of Kaligonj upazila; South Balapara, Gobordhan, Kadomtala and Kutirpar of Aditmari upazila.
Many houses in the flood-hit villagers have gone under two feet water and the affected villagers taken shelter on high lands and embankments.
