President for rights of elderly people
President M Zillur Rahman yesterday called upon all to uphold the dignity and rights of elderly people in society.
"Let us contribute to the welfare of the senior and elderly citizens in society," he said in a message of the eve of the International Day of Older Persons - 2011.
The president greeted the elderly people in the country on the occasion of the day.
He said old age is an evitable part of life when the elderly people become dependent on the families, society and state.
At this stage, it is the responsibility of all to stand by the elderly people, the president said and reminded all that the elderly people had once contributed immensely to the development and progress.
"Therefore, it is our moral and social obligation to ensure their happy and peaceful life at the fag end of their lives," he said.
Zillur wished all programmes of International Day of Older Persons a success.
