Hospital vandalised as newborn dies
Locals vandalised a private hospital in Santhia upazila on Wednesday following death of a newborn baby.
Shahnaz Begum, 25, wife of Shafiqul Islam of Dulai village, was admitted to Pabna Community Medical College and Hospital at Bishnapur in the upazila with labour pain at around 10:00am on Wednesday.
Police and locals said, as there was no doctor, a nurse and hospital maids performed caesarean on Shahnaz who gave birth to a baby. But the newborn baby died within a few minutes.
Shahnaz's relatives alleged that the baby died as the operation performed on Shahnaz went wrong. They vandalised the hospital and brought out a procession demanding arrest and punishment of the nurse and other hospital staff .
Shahnaz's husband Shafiqul filed a case with Santhia Police Station, accusing six people including the owner of the hospital. Police arrested four staff of the hospital. They are manager Abdus Salam, nurse Asia Khatun, Sathi Khatun and maid Sheli Akhter.
Kafil Uddin, owner of the hospital, and nurse Nazma Akhter, who performed caesarean, went into hiding. The arrestees were yesterday produced in a Pabna court that sent them to jail.
