Four kids drown while collecting water lilies

Five kids drowned in Pabna, Jhenidah and Natore districts on Wednesday and the day before. Two children drowned while two others were injured as their boat capsized in a water body at Sadullapur in Sadar upazila of Pabna on Wednesday, reports our correspondent. The hapless girls were identified as Shammi Parvin,6, daughter of Abdur Rahim, Brishti Khatun, 8, daughter of Jonab Ali of Tatipara village. The injured are Shima Khatun, 6, daughter of Abdul Hye and Shapla Khatun, 7, daughter of Sonar Ali of the village and students of a local primary school. Locals said five children went to the water body by a small boat to collect water lily. All of a sudden, the boat capsized and sank as they lost control over the boat. Shammi and Brishti drowned, but the other kid, who was traveling in the boat with them, managed to swim ashore, locals said. Locals rescued the four children and took them to Pabna Medical College and Hospital where Shammi and Brishti were declared dead. In Jhenidah, two cousins drowned in a canal at Dhanbandha village in Sadar upazila on Wednesday afternoon, reports our correspondent. The victims were identified as Meem, 6, daughter of Firoz Ali of the village and Atik, 4, son of Kashem Ali of the village. Family members said the two kids went to collect `shapla` (water lily) in a nearby canal. But they drowned as they went deep under water to pluck water lily. They were rushed to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared them dead. In Natore, a two-year-old girl drowned in a pond at Domrai village under Bagatipara upazila on Tuesday afternoon, reports our correspondent. The victim is Subarna Khatun, daughter of Saidul Islam of the village. Police and family sources said, Subarna was playing near the pond beside their house. After sometime she went too close to the pond and fell in the water and drowned. In Satkhira, a young man drowned in a pond at Gadkhali village in Kalaroa yesterday. The victim was identified as Md Saheb Ali, 35, son of Md Eman Ali Sardar of the village, reports our correspondent. Quoting local people police said Saheb drowned while taking bath and drowned as he did not know how to swim. Local people recovered the body from the pond at about 2:30 pm.
