Students and teachers of Gaibandha Government Mohila College formed a human chain at DB Road in the town yesterday demanding immediate arrest and capital punishment of the culprits involved in the killing of a student of the college on Tuesday. Ratna Akhter Riya, 18, daughter of Raju Ahmed of Kholabari village under Gaibandha Sadar upazila, was a second year student of the college. She was residing at her maternal uncle Hafizur Rahman's house at Kanchipara village in Fulchhari upazila of the district. Riya along with her grandmother was sleeping in a room of the house on Monday night. A gang of unidentified criminals entered the room, opening its door, threw petrol on Riya and set her on fire. Hearing screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and sent Riya to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital. On Tuesday morning, Riya was referred to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where she died in the afternoon. Riya's maternal uncle Hafizur Rahman filed a case with Fulchhari Police Station on Tuesday night. Police could not arrest any of the killers as of 6:00pm yesterday. A condolence meeting was held at the college yesterday with Principal Mohammed Zakaria in the chair. Vice-Principal Shamsul Huq, teachers Hamid Kalim, Abu Zafar, Mostafizur Rahman, AKM Shahidur Rahman, Jahangir Alam, Moshiur Rahman and college student Nazima Akhter Banu spoke. The speakers demanded immediate arrest and capital punishment of the culprits responsible for the killing. Bangladesh Mohila Parishad Gaibandha unit has condemned the killing. The leaders of the unit yesterday submitted a memorandum to the district police superintendent demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of Riya's killer.
