Killing of Gournadi Teacher
Jubo League man held
Police yesterday arrested a Jubo League activist in connection with the killing of primary schoolteacher Shah Farid Zamaddar, also a former JCD leader .
The arrestee is Mukul Jamaddar, 35, a member of Gournadi upazila Jubo League convening committee.
Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Gournadi Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, said police arrested Mukul Jamaddar, 35, in Diashur area of Gournadi municipal town at around 10:30am, tracking his mobile phone call list.
Mukul was sent to Barisal district police office yesterday noon. Police Superintendent Dev Das Bhattacharya said Mukul was shown arrested in the murder case as he confessed to his involvement in the killing of Farid Zamaddar during primary interrogation.
Earlier, police recorded the statement of a woman named Shefali as witness to the incident and interrogated two BCL activists--Saddam Sardar and Zia Saradar--in connection with the murder.
Farid Zamaddar, 29, a teacher of Pinglakathi Government Primary School in Gournadi upazila, was hacked to death allegedly by BCL activists while going to the school at around 9:40am on Thursday.
Victim's brother Shah Jalal Zamaddar, also a primary schoolteacher, filed a murder case with Gournadi Police Station the same day.
In the case statement, he alleged that his brother Farid Zamaddar had an altercation with local BCL cadres over 'Bangabandhu-Bangamata Football Tournament' in the upazila last month.
As a sequel to the incident, BCL cadres led by Nayon and Kajal hacked Farid on way to his school on Thursday morning, leaving him critically injured. Farid was taken to Gournadi Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead, Jalal stated in the statement.
Protesting the killing of Farid, also former vice-president of Gournadi Government College JCD unit, a half-day Hartal was observed in the municipal town on Friday. Primary schoolteachers in the upazila have started a week-long protest programme, wearing black badges.
