UP chairman's men beat up newsman in Pirganj

A union parishad (UP) chairman in Pirganj upazila has beaten up a newsman for writing a story on his misdeeds. Bhendabari UP chairman Monjur Hossain Mondol and his men beat up Pirganj upazila correspondent of The Daily Manab Zamin Anjarul Haque, leaving him seriously injured on Friday night following publication of a report on the daily the same day, Pirganj police said. Later the attackers confined the newsman to a room in a market, they said. Being informed, police rushed to the spot and rescued him. Contacted, Anjarul Haque said the UP chairman became furious for writing the report against him for beating up a woman named Meherunnesa at the UP complex on September 8 following previous enmity over a land dispute. The chairman also beat up Meherunnesa's younger sister Shantona Begum who came to rescue her, the report said. The report further said the chairman lodged a complaint against the women with Bhendabari police. Later, the chairman's men took the two to the police outpost where they were freed after giving signature on a blank sheet. The UP chairman threatened Anjarul with the dire consequence for writing the report. He lodged a complaint with police who did not pay heed to the complaint. The newsman was undergoing treatment at Pirganj upazila health complex till filing of the report yesterday afternoon. This correspondent tried to reach the UP chairman over cell phone several times but he could not reach the chairman.
