Procession, rally demand arrest of the killers

People of Baholatoli village under Harirampur upazila yesterday brought out a procession and held a rally at the upazila headquarter demanding arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers of Rubel Mondol. Rubel Mondol, 25, son of Wahab Mondol of the village, was killed by a gang on the night of September 12. Police recovered the body from the Ichhamoti River near Jahanara Arju High School at Purba Khalilpur village the following day. Rubel's father Wahab Mondol filed a murder case with Harirampur Police Station the same day against nine people. The accused are Pappu Dewan, 22, Shahinur Mondol, 22, Rajib, 23, Alamgir, 27, Azad, 25, Uzzal-1, 25, Makrab Mondol, 27, Ridoy, 23 and Ujjal-2, 23 of the village. Around one thousand people, including family members of the victim, joined the procession that brought out at around 11:00am. After parading the main streets, the processionists held a rally in front of Harirampur Muktijoddha Sangsad office. At the rally, the villagers demanded immediate arrest of the killers. They later met the upazila nirbahi officer and the officer-in-charge (OC) of Harirampur Police Station and demanded immediate arrest of the criminals. Contacted, Officer in Charge (OC) Shawkat Ali said Rubel was murdered following an altercation with the members of unregistered Baholatoli Samabaya Samity over return of Tk 10,000 he borrowed from the samity 6-7 months ago. “We arrested Shahinur Mondol, one of the nine accused in the the murder case. We got important information from the arrestee,” the OC said. The OC further said the law enforcers are trying to arrest the rest of the accused. Harirampur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Apurba Kumer Mondol said the issue was discussed at the meeting on the law and order situation recently. Police are looking for the culprits involved in the killing, the UNO added.
