Human chains demanding steps to stop river erosion
Two human chains were formed separately in Noarpara union under Islampur upazila of the district yesterday demanding steps to stop erosion by Jamuna river.
A human chain was formed at village Ulia at 12 noon while the other was formed at village Kadomtoli at 1:00 pm in the upazila.
A large number of villagers took part in the human chain programmes held to realise the demand for protecting their homesteads and croplands from Jamuna.
People of 10 villages of Noarpara union joined the human chain on the bank of the river at village Ulia while people of 2 villages of the union gathered to form another human chain at village Kadomtoli.
The villagers of Ulia, Kadomtoli, Hargila and Guthail of Noarpara union have been facing serious river erosion for long.
During the recent years the Jamuna turned so violent that many of the villagers of those areas became shelterless and landless. Our sufferings know no bounds, the erosion victims said.
After the human chains the erosion victims also held a rally.
Speakers at the rally said many families of the riverside villages were affected badly by Jamuna erosion. Many of the victims lost their croplands and became landless and homeless in the last few years.
They demanded urgent steps to thwart the river erosion and threatened further agitation of their demand was not met.
