15 robbers jailed, seven of another gang arrested
Fifteen robbers were jailed in Kishoreganj on Sunday while seven arrested in Moulvibazar the day before.
A court in Kishoreganj on Sunday sentenced 15 robbers to 10 years imprisonment each in a robbery case.
The court also fined them Tk 5,000 each, in default, to suffer two months RI more, reports UNB.
The convicts are: M Farid Mia, Mohammad Ali, M Yunus Ali, Solaiman, M Idris, Saiful, M Badal Mia, Kazal, Jamal Mia, Hossain Mia, Shariatullah, Mannaf, Mahram, Madhu Mia and Yasin driver.
According to the prosecution, the aforesaid convicts swooped on a town-bound SR Paribahan bus from Dhaka and looted cash Tk and valuables from the passengers taking the driver hostage at gunpoint at Panaularchar in Bhairab upazila on December 13, 1995.
A case was lodged against 18 people in this connection.
After examining the records and witnesses Judge of the First Additional Sessions Judge Court SM Abdus Salam handed down the verdict acquitting three others.
Among the convicts seven were tried in absentia.
Meanwhile, police on Saturday night arrested seven alleged members of an inter-district robber gang in separate drives in Sadar upazila and Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj district.
The arrestees were identified as Rafiqul Islam, Sonor Mia, Shipon Ahmed, Russell Mia, Masum Mia, Ruman Ahmed and Wahid Mia.
Acting on secret information, a team led by Moulvibazar Model Thana officer-in-charge Amulya Kumar Chowdhury conducted a drive in Athangiri area of Sadar upazila and arrested five robbers while they were preparing to commit a robbery, police said.
Later, on the basis of their confession, police arrested two other gang members from Habiganj town and Deora area of Nabiganj upazila the same night.
In Khulna, an alleged robber died at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) on Sunday night, 20 hours after he was injured in a mob beating at Bonikpara in Teligati in the city.
The deceased was identified as Abul Kalam Azad, 32, son of Osman Sheikh of Moheshwarpasha of Daulatpur upazila.
Police said locals caught Azad and beat him black and blue when he attempted to decamp with booties after committing robbery at the house of one Mukunda Chandra Ghatak at 1:30 am on Sunday.
Severely injured Azad was rescued by police and admitted to KMCH where he succumbed at night.
