Terminated workers ransack factory in Barisal
Terminated casual workers at a factory of Opso-Saline, a leading pharmaceutical company in the country, ransacked and vandalised rooms of the factory on Saturday.
Earlier, 38 workers of the factory were terminated from the job on the day for their alleged role in recent labour agitation.
Md Ripon, one of the terminated workers said when he went to his workplace on Saturday morning, officials informed that he has been terminated from service without any prior notice.
Hearing the news of termination of 38 fellows,the workers became agitated and ransacked some rooms of the factory, he said.
Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Earlier, the workers of Opso-Saline on August 6 vandalised the factory at Kabi Jibanananda Sarak and stopped production at Global Capsule factory, another unit of the group in Rupatali area in the city as the authorities failed to meet their longstanding 15-point demand.
The demands include appointment letter, job regularisation, leave with pay, meal, medical benefits, and stopping dismissals of workers without prior notice and job as per labour law.
The next day, an agreement between the owners, workers and labour directorate officials was signed to end the unrest.
Saidur Rahman Khan, executive officer (admin) of Opso-Saline factory, said the company terminated only the casual workers who were involved in anti-disciplinary activities in the factory.
