Culvert collapses only nine months into construction

A culvert on Galachipa launch terminal approach road collapsed nine months into its construction, causing immense trouble to the passengers. The culvert, built at a cost of Tk 2.80 lakh, collapsed during last week's high tide. Locals alleged that Golachipa municipality constructed the culvert with brick wall instead of concrete wall. The municipal authorities have placed a wooded plank on the collapsed site to help passengers cross it. Launch passengers use the wooded plank amid risk of accident. Several thousand launch passengers use Golachipa terminal everyday and the culvert was built only the approach road to the terminal. Local businessmen are also face problems to carry their goods to and from the terminal as vehicles cannot ply the approach road due to collapse of the culvert. They urged the authorities concerned to rebuild the culvert as soon as possible. Moshiur Rahman, assistant engineer of Galachipa municipality, could not be contacted over cellphone for his comment despite repeated attempts. Contacted, Galachipa Municipality Mayor Abdul Wahab Khalifa said the culvert collapsed under heavy pressure of water during high tide. He said the municipality authorities will rebuild the culvert immediately.
