AL men block highway demanding release of leader held for 'looting'

Leaders and activists of Ramgarh upazila Awami League yesterday blocked Khagrachhari-Feni road in Ramgarh Bazar area for seven hours from 6:00am demanding release of one of their leaders arrested on Monday night. Police said Abdul Kalam, vice-president of Awami League Ramgarh upazila unit, was arrested on charge of leading a gang that allegedly attacked and looted some houses in Ramgarh area on Friday. Wahidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ramgarh Police Station, said they arrested the AL leader following a case filed against him by the victims. Commuters had to face a lot of trouble as AL men blocked traffic by burning tryes and putting up barricades on Khagrachhari-Feni road. District AL leaders went to Ramgarh and sat with the plaintiffs who withdrew the case against Karim after negotiation. Vehicular movement on the road resumed after Karim was released at around 1:00pm Khagrachhari district AL Vice-President Kujendra Lal Chakma told this correspondent that the incident occurred due to a misunderstanding between two local AL leaders. A member of Ramgarh upazila AL requesting anonymity said Karim had a longstanding feud with another party leader named Shah Alam over establishing supremacy and distributing VGF cards in the area.
