Agitated villagers torched houses of three criminals in Sadar upazila yesterday morning after a man was stabbed to death allegedly by them.
Locals said expatriate Ali Ashraf Mia, 42, was stabbed by a gang at Harukandi village in the upazila around 7:00pm Sunday.
He died at National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in Dhaka around 3:00am yesterday.
Ashraf, son of Abdul Momen Mia, who lived in Saudi Arabia for 12 years, recently returned to his village to start a business.
After the news of his death spread in the village, angry mob set fire to the houses of Ratan Khandakar, Masum Mridha and Rajib Shikder -- three local criminals.
When the firefighters reached the spot, local people also forced them not to douse the fire.
Locals claimed that Ashraf, while talking to the villagers had protested illegal toll collection by the trio.
