Rangpur jewellers observe strike
Jewellers observed a half-day strike in Rangpur town yesterday demanding arrest of those who looted gold ornaments from two jewellery shops in the town on the night of August 31.
They kept the shutters of their shops down for eight hours from 6:00am and formed a human chain at Kachari Bazar at noon.
Other businessmen in town extended their support to the strike and joined the human chain programme that lasted for an hour.
Gold ornaments worth about Tk 40 lakh were looted from two jewellery shops--Uttara Jewellers and Bodhua Jewellers-- at Jahaj Company point in Rangpur town. Thieves broke open the shops on the night of August 31 and took away the gold ornaments.
The owners of the two shops lodged cases with Rangpur Kotwali Police Station on September 1. Police arrested two night guards of the area on September 2. But on one of the gang was arrested as of yesterday.
