Pirates loot trawlers, kidnap 50 fishermen in Bagerhat
Pirates looted around 50 trawlers and abducted at least one fisherman from each trawler in Fairway area under Narkelbariachar of East Sundarbans in Sharankhola upazila of the district on Saturday night.
According to the trawler owners, a gang of 25-30 pirates led by infamous Al-Amin, brother of ringleader of Motalib Bahini swooped on the fishing trawlers and looted fishing nets, fuel and about 100 maunds of hilsa from the fishermen.
At least 20 fishermen were injured during the attack. The looted goods were worth Tk 30lakh, said some fishermen.
The pirates also abducted at least 50 fishermen along with several trawlers.
The pirates told the released fishermen that they will demand Tk 20,000 ransom from the family of each fisherman.
All the kidnapped fishermen hailed from different villages of Khulna, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Bhola, Barisal and Barguna districts.
Saidur Rahman, commander of Coast Guard west zone said they have heard about the incident and trying to have the details of the matter.
Coast Guard members are conducting drive in the coastal areas to nab the pirates and rescue the abducted fishermen, he said.
