Erosion by the river Padma took a serious turn devouring about 20 dwelling houses at Naruhati and Singhanagar villages under Satbaria union in Sujanagar upazila within a week. “The river devoured at least 18 houses in the two villages in a week. More 25 to 30 more families have already shifted their houses to safer places, said Md Abul Hossain, chairman of Satbaria union parishad. The victims were identified as Khalil member, Jilal Uddin, Abu Bakkar, Akkas Ali, Rajab Ali, Abdul Hakim, Abdul Mannan, Abdul Hannan, Mamun Hossain, Belayet Hossain, Delwar Hossain and Torab Ali of Naruhati and Singhanagar villages. Sources said the intensity of erosion is so severe that many affected people had no time to shift elsewhere with their goods and other belongings. They later sold their moveable properties and trees at throwaway prices. Meanwhile, vast areas of arable land, trees and one educational institution of the village went into the gorge of the river, reports UNB. Victim Khalil Member said, the river Padma eroded thousands of houses and vast croplands in the last 10 years in the district and his dwelling houses were washed away seven times in his lifetime. Local people said no steps have yet been taken to check river erosion and the homeless families did not get any help from the government or any other organisation. They said hundreds of houses, vast areas of croplands, trees, educational institutions and madrassas of Singhanagar, Shyamnagar, Bhatpara, Gupinpur, Maspara, Raipur, Malfia, Kamarhat, Indrojitpur, Mohonpur, Mohabbatpur, Udoypur and Goaria villages in the upazila are now facing erosion threat.
