Fresh agitation demanding punishment to culprits

Hundreds of ethnic people from different upazilas agitated in the town yesterday demanding punishment to rapists and killers of santal woman Moriam Murmu about two months ago. Pargana Parishad, Dighori Parishad, Baisi parishad and Uttarbanga Adibasi Forum jointly brought out procession, formed human chain and held a rally in front of the press club. Speakers at the rally said, Moriam Murmu,48, widow of late Hopna Mardi of Chaitanpur village in Tanore upazila, was gang raped and tortured to death at Shimla Dighipara village of Godagari upazila in Rajshahi district, allegedly as a sequel to a land dispute with her late husband's relatives. Moriam went to bed at around 9:00pm on July 10. Neighbour Shaheb Kisku's wife Anjali Murmu saw her stripped body hanging from a tree at around 6:00am. Informed by locals, police recovered Moriam's body from a tree beside a pond, some 100 yards away from her paternal home at Shimla Dighipara where she had been living after her husband's death. Moriam's son Wilson Marandi filed a murder case with Godagari police station on the same day, citing his paternal uncle Biswanath Maraddi as a suspect in the murder. The speakers said that Mariam's murder shocked not only the ethnic people but also the people of other communities in the region. This murder goes against humanity. Our civilised society can not accept this brutal murder, they said. The protesters demanded immediate arrest of all rapists and killers of Mariam Murmu and their exemplary punishment. They also urged the government and local administration to ensure steps for security of the indigenous people in the region. Earlier, hundreds of people including women and children from different villages of Nachole, Gomostapur and Sadar upazilas brought out a procession and paraded different streets of Chapainawabganj town, formed human chain and held a rally. Hingu Murmu, president of Uttarbanga Adibasi Forum, Chapainawabganj unit presided over the rally. Besides Kornelius Murmu, Provat Tudu, Shyamol Saren, Anwarul Islam, principal of Shahnyamot Ullah College, Golam Mostofa Montu, former president of Chapainawabganj Press Club, Anwar Hossain Dilu, staff correspondent of Daily Prothom Alo, Chapainaawabganj, political leader Moniruzzaman Monir, social worker Golam Rashid spoke at the rally. Victim's son Wilson Marandi also spoke. I want justice. I demand exemplary punishment to my mother's killers", he said.
