One killed, 15 hurt as rival AL men clash over pond capture

One person was killed and at least 15 others were injured in a clash between two rival groups of Awami League over capture of a pond at Khan Mahmudpur village in Santhia upazila of the district yesterday. Police and locals said the supporters of Abdul Awal, secretary of a ward unit of Dhopadaha union Awami League swooped on the men of Ziaul Islam Zia, an activist of the union AL, when they went to capture the pond at the village at around 9:30am. The rival AL men used sticks, iron rods and other lethal weapons during the clash, leaving at least 16 people from both sides injured. One of the injured named Abul Kalam Azad alias Mukti, 35, brother of Ziaul Islam Zia, succumbed to his injuries on way to Pabna Medical College and Hospital while the rest are undergoing treatment at Santhia Upazila Health Complex. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Santhia Police Station SM Bazlur Rashid said police dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control at around 12:30am. Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further clash, he added. Our Jhenidah correspondent reported that at least 25 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups of villagers in Putia village under Sadar upazila yesterday. Police raided the village soon after the incident and arrested 20 people for their alleged involvement in the clash. Locals and police said the clash was a sequel to a feud between the two groups-one led by Moksed Joarder and the other by Tasirul Islam-over Putia Union Parishad election held in June this year. Following an altercation between some supporters of Moksed and Tasirul in the morning, the rival groups equipped with lethal weapons attacked each other, leaving at least 25 people from both sides injured. Of the injured, Moksed Ali Joarder, Shahidul Islam Joarder, Abdur Razzak, Abdul Mannan, Awal Khan, Shamsul Islam, Pikul Hossain, Travel Hossain, Khairul Islam, Nayeb Ali, Montu Hossain, Sukur Ali, Monowara Khatun and Monjur Rahman were admitted to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital and Magura Hospital while the rest given first aid at different clinics in Jhenidah town. Officer-in-charge (OC) Iqbal Bahar of Sadar Police Station said they have arrested 20 people on charge of their involvement in the clash. Meanwhile, the supporters of Tabolchhari UP chairman injured two ruling party men at Tabolchhari Bazar under Matiranga upazila of Khagrachhari district on Saturday, reports our correspondent. The injured are Matiranga upazila Awami League member Shamsul Alam, also a freedom fighter, and Jamal Uddin, secretary of Tabalchhari union Jubo League. Officer-in-charge of Matiranga Police Station Mohammad Abu Yusuf quoted local people as saying that 10-12 supporters of Tabolchhari UP Chairman Abul Kashem attacked the ruling party men at Tabolchhari Bazar at around 9:30am. He said the incident was a sequel to a conflict between the ruling party men and the UP chairman over establishing supremacy in the bazar area.
